Joint origins of speech and music: testing evolutionary hypotheses on modern humans

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract How music and speech evolved is a mystery. Several hypotheses on their origins, including one joint have been put forward but rarely tested. Here we report comment the first experiment testing hypothesis that bifurcated from common system. We highlight strengths of reported experiment, point out its relatedness to animal work, suggest three alternative interpretations results. conclude by sketching future empirical programme extending this work.

Origins of modern humans still look recent

Disotell reviews some recent reports that bear on the geographic locations of human ancestors during the transition to modern human form [1]. One side of the debate is the “recent replacement” model, which was described as one in which our ancestors lived within a single population in Africa prior to their spread outside of Africa “...beginning around 200,000 years ago.” Surprisingly, Disotell ...

Developmental Origins of Adult Function and Health: Evolutionary Hypotheses

Many biological systems have critical periods that overlap with the age of maternal provisioning via placenta or lactation. As such, they serve as conduits for phenotypic information transfer between generations and link maternal experience with offspring biology and disease outcomes. This review critically evaluates proposals for an adaptive function of these responses in humans. Although most...

Testing multiregionality of modern human origins.

In order to examine the possibility of multiple founding populations of anatomically modern Homo sapiens, we collected DNA sequence data from 10 X-chromosomal regions, 5 autosomal regions, and 1 Y-chromosomal region, in addition to mitochondrial DNA. Except for five regions which are genealogically uninformative and two other regions for which chimpanzee orthologs are not available, the ancestr...
